how does a ketone react with PCl5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PCl5 turns an OH group into a Cl group. It doesn't really react with the ketone, but with the tautomer. For example: |dw:1359220447133:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You'd need an acid to catalyze it though or there would be no reaction

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Are you sure it's a tautomer? If it's in an acid, I think that acid would donate a proton. But what do I know :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops, meant to say base! I haven't actually learned about tautomers in class, only from reading the textbook.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay! Got it. Thanks!
