Not energy, or matter.

True, however we only deal with mass in this case... for the rock cycle to run, we need a lot of energy levels. Fx magma might have a bit more energy than a common rock (the mass of magma and the rock is the same)

If I had to make a guess from a thermodynamical view I would say that the rock cycle are the energy levels for materials/rocks found in nature.
