A chef makes a pot of soup. He first adds 1/2 of the amount of water required to make the soup. After 15 minutes of cooking, he adds 4 more cups of water, bringing the amount of water to 2/3 of what is required to make the soup. How many total cups of water must he use to make the soup?

1/2 can also be written as 3/6 and 2/3 can also be written as 4/6. So 4/6 - 3/6 equals 1/6, which is the amount of water you added at the 15 minute mark, which equals 4 cups. So if 1/6 = 4 cups, then 6/6 = 24 cups.
