OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you told the two lines are parallel?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it just says solve for x ... @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are there little marks on the two lines? |dw:1359323807860:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes , what does those mean ? @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Those little marks mean the lines are paralle. If the lines are not parallel, you can't solve the problem bec you don't know anything about the angle measures. If the lines are parallel, then the angles whose measure you have are called alternate exterior angles, and they are congruent, so 5 + 8x = 9x - 4 Solve for x

do I add 4 to each side ? @mathstudent55
