this uses the circle geometry theorem that

" the product of the 2 intervals on the circle on the secant is equal to the square of the tangent"... Pender(2000: p 382)



so in your question let the external segment = x

then the length of the whole segment is (5 + x)

the products of these 2 segments is equal to the square of the tangent...
