OpenStudy (aravindg):

Is order important when considering sample space in probability ?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I was told that sample space for the question "a family has 2 children " is {BB,BG,GG,GB} But isnt BG=GB because either of them will be a boy or girl , so is the order also important here? A bit confused :)

OpenStudy (zarkon):

BG\(\ne\)GB

OpenStudy (aravindg):

so the order is important?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

what if I then asked what is the prob the first child is a boy

OpenStudy (zarkon):

the sample space is just the list of all possible outcomes...there are 4 outcomes with this experiment

OpenStudy (aravindg):

thats a good question ...so in general for any question on probability I should also lookout for the order ?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

not always...it depends on the question

OpenStudy (zarkon):

the sample space you list ALL outcomes. then if you want you can ask a probability question that depends on the order

OpenStudy (aravindg):

O.K now I understand.... thanks :)
