Mike is six less than three times his daughter's age. Mike is 36; how old is his daughter? 10 12 14 16

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Write down what you know, as equations. Let Mike's daughter's age be x. Mike's age is 3 times his daughter's age, minus 6, so Mike's age is 3x - 6. But we also know that Mike's age is 36. So, 3x - 6 = 36. Solve that for x, and you know how old his daughter is. I feel sorry for Mike :-)
