In parallelogram DEFG, DH = x + 3, HF = 3y, GH = 2x – 5, and HE = 5y + 2. Find the values of x and y. x = 39, y = 14 x = 13, y = 36 x = 14, y = 39 x = 36, y = 13

diagram ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (raden):

where is the H ?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I think this is the diagram.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In the middle

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

So we have two equations in two unknowns, because either side of the diagonal must be equal.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

\[x+3 = 3y\]For the DH-HF diagonal \[2x-5=5y+2\]For the EH-HG diagonal Solve by elimination or substitution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=39,y=14. x=13,y=36. x=36,y=13. x=14,=39. these are my answer choices.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The correct answer is among them. You could solve the equations, as I suggested, or you could try them all out to see which one works for both equations.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'd be happy to help you solve them, but you have to put in some effort!
