Start with:\[-(4+6x)-3\]Distribute the negative to both terms in the parentheses and then drop the parentheses:\[-4-6x-3\]Combine like terms: \[-6x-7\]

So whenever I get a problem like this all I have to do is combine like terms?

Well, you do that at the end. First we had to get rid of the parentheses in this problem
