Which of the following releases energy? Nutrients entering a cell through the cell membrane Removing a phosphate group from an ATP molecule Building sugar or starch molecules for long-term energy storage Adding an additional phosphate group to an ADP molecule
fine, its ofcourse.....buildin sugar or starch molecules.....
@Koikkara The construction of sugar and starch is a method of energy storage. The question asks us to name a method of energy release, not storage. ~~~~~~~~~ @christianfilms11 Have you heard of ATP? Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is a molecule that stores energy, so that our body can use it for whatever it needs. Here's a picture of ATP. Take a look: http://www.uic.edu/classes/bios/bios100/mike/spring2003/atp.jpg Take a look at the YELLOW phosphate groups. Do you see how ATP has THREE phosphate groups, all bonded together? A lot of energy is stored in between the SECOND and THIRD phosphate groups. When it's time to release the energy, the THIRD (last) phosphate group breaks away. That is when energy is released, so that our cells can use it. The whole process of releasing energy from ATP is called "ATP Hydrolysis."
