Power is the rate of doing work or, alternatively, the rate of expenditure of energy. Therefore power is expressed in units such as joule/sec.
Work in the mechanical sense is done whenever a force moves its point of application in the direction of the force; it is measured by the product of the force and the distance which the force moves in its own direction. A unit of work is the newton-meter = joule.
