in the formula for the golden ratio, what do a and b stand for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a/b=(a+b)/a This is the formula for the ratio that I found online. The website did not explain what a and b stood for. I have to prove how I can calculate the golden ratio to the third decimal place, but dont understand what the question is asking. Can someone explain? This is the exact question, (What is the value of the golden ratio to three decimal places?)
