It's true that Hitler and the Nazis hated Communism and that the Soviets did not trust the West. There had been overtures by others such as the UK to sign some kind of alliance before Hitler, but the Soviets didn't bite. But what Hitler offered Stalin was something none of the others could -- Poland. There was already a great deal of bad blood between the Poles and the Bolsheviks, and Hitler was hungry for more territory. At the time, the Nazis and the Soviets weren't enemies. Ideologically they were opposed, but on a pragmatic level, they had some things working out between them. The Soviets were actually supplying Nazi Germany with raw materials such as oil and were largely content to see Hitler run rampant across Europe, toppling one capitalist nation after another while they took back what they felt was theirs in Eastern Europe.
