I found a book listed at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK21054/ I wont guarantee its the one for this course but it was an interesting read

In UK, most Biology courses usually start off with one of two introductory books: 1) Biology by Campbell and Reece 2) Life: the science of Biology by Purves. Easily found on amazon or you might want to check for the ebook (if available).
