WHY DO DIFFERENCES EXIST BETWEEN PIGMENTS? GIVE AN EVOLUTIONARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPLANATION.
It's a question of wavelenght absorption. Chlorophylls can absorb wavelenghts in blue (?) and red (i think). Differences between pigments is a consequence of evolution. In fact, primary photosynthetic organisms used to live in Oceans, and water absorb wavelenghts in decroissant order. For example, the red disappears just a few meters under the surface. As a consequence, these organisms developped surnumerary pigments, able to absorp others wavelenghts and to transmitt their energy to chlorophyll. Thus, primary photosynthetic organisms were able to live in deep waters, as the red algae (for example) actually do. Hope it helps, re ask the question if necessary, i sometimes have some problems to translate my french ideas into english XD
