why do historians consider the greatest achievement of the Byzantine Empire to be the preservation of Greek and Roman cultures?

I think it's because the Greek and Roman Cultures lead to and are still seen in so so so so so SOOOO many things we see today, not to mention there are still many unknown reasons behind the roman/greek monuments and that sorta thing. It gives us insight to a lot and how much we've branched off of such ancient ideas.
