Help Please! 5x + 2y = 8 x + y = 4 If you want to solve the system of equations by addition, which of the following could you do? Multiply the second equation by 5 and add. Multiply the second equation by 2 and add. Multiply the second equation by -2 and add.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

you would divide both sides first by 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats not an option on the test

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

then you would get this: 5x=2y hold on im trying to explain the steps to lead you to an option

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it the first one?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

no its the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou!

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

then you would divide both sides by 2 and get a final answer of y=-5/2x

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

so that means that you would multiply the second equation by two and end because if you work backwards, you would use the reciprocal of division which is multiplication
