Take a look at this picture: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/disorders/whataregd/sicklecell/images/sicklecell.jpg It shows us a side-by-side comparison of normal red blood cells, and the crescent-shaped blood cells of someone who has sickle cell anemia. The hemoglobin in the sickle shaped blood cells is different from what it should be. It's very stiff, which makes it easy for the blood cells to get stuck in our blood vessels. It's also a very painful genetic disorder.
