After the Civil War, Southerners' resentment of Republicans helped propel the Democratic Party to a majority in Congress by the 1870s & bring an end to Reconstruction. The Democrats were now the party of states rights, the party of the South, and would remain that way until the mid-1960s.

Redeemers. This reconstruction era faction withered away over time. An opinion: The last vestiges of it probably existed up until the 1960's - known then as "Dixiecrats."
