Find the solutions of the function using the quadratic formula y=0.05x^2 + x + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you familiar with the quadratic formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really and i dont really know how to solve an equation usiing it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

y=0.05x^2 + x + 1 0=0.05x^2 + x + 1 ... plug in y = 0 0.05x^2 + x + 1 = 0 ... flip the equation 100(0.05x^2 + x + 1) = 100*0 ... multiply both sides by 100 5x^2 + 100x + 100 = 0 ... distribute Now use the quadratic formula to solve for x \[\Large x = \frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\] \[\Large x = \frac{-(100)\pm\sqrt{(100)^2-4(5)(100)}}{2(5)}\] \[\Large x = \frac{-100\pm\sqrt{10000-(2000)}}{10}\] \[\Large x = \frac{-100\pm\sqrt{8000}}{10}\] I'll let you finish
