The population of a city is 2,500. If the number of males is 240 more than the number of females, how many males and females are there in the city? (How would I get the equations from this)

OpenStudy (stamp):

\[P=2,500\]\[females=f\]\[males=f+240\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So your variables are P and f? Which is x and which is y?

OpenStudy (stamp):

I do not have x and y. x and y can be a and b, c and d, booger and pickle, it is whatever you want. A variable is merely a symbol used to denote and represent a known or unknown term.

OpenStudy (stamp):

\[P_{total}=P_{females}+P_{males}\]

Alright I'll try it.
