ok, so I like to change everything into proper fractions first of all. so 9+1/2 becomes 19/2 and 4+3/4 becomes 19/4 so we need a common denominator of 4. so 19/2 becomes 38/4 38/4-19/4 it becomes 19/4 or 4+3/4
9 .....1/2--> 2/4 4 ......3/4-->3/4 --------- ......you cant subtract 3/4 from 2/4 so you have to borrow. Take one (4/4)away from 9 and add it to 2/4. This makes the problem... 8 6/4 4 3/4 ------subtract 4 3/4
