write a short reflection on how the social order of modern day theatre differs from that of Elizabethan England. You may wish to research current ticket prices in your area if you are uncertain about modern rates. What has changed since Shakespeare's time? Where would the patrons sit today? Why do you think this change has taken place? How does the social order of modern-day theater differ from that of Elizabethan England?
In Elizabethan England, theatre was a rare ocassion for people to have fun in an "organized" way. Viewers would be packed and stand up on a sandy soil (to minimize the effect of eating and "doing their things" on the ground. The prices would be very cheap (therefore they would have to house a large audience to make it profitable), and they would have more expensive ones, these under a roof, for the well off. Since shakespearian times, the type of play has changed, so has the housing itself, being more luxurious. Patrons today will seat in the first rows, whether in the past they would sit in the roofed area that wasn´t close to the stage. Socially, it hasn´t changed much, as in the past, anyone could afford attending a theatre play, even tough the conditions were miserable, and then there would be the upper social class that would view the play from their seats. Nowadays the differences between the attendants are not so acute, as today theatre is more than a folks experience, it is a social and cultural act, with the stress in its cultural part.
