use the pythagorean theorem :
x^2 = 24^2 - 12^2
solve for x

Pythagorean Theorem: a^2 + b^2 = c^2
In this case, you have the hypotenuse and the height
so you can fill in it as: 12^2 + b^2 = 24^2
*b is the same thing as x
and you can just solve for the missing variable by squaring the numbers and moving 12^2 over to the right side by subtracting it.
Voila! the answer!
