if the circut does not contain the dependent source then turn off all independent sources .the equivelent resistance of the resulting circuit is Rth (thevenin resistance )
while Vth (thevenin voltage can be found by either nodal or mesh analysis .

while turing off the independent sources 
replace independent voltage source with  short cicuit .  
replace independent current source with open circut .

yes resistance is find by the same way 
RN=Rth

in case of norton  short cicut current is also required .
short circut current is  =Vth/Rth.
