3. How did population shifts change American life during the war? The Southwest became a growing cultural, social, economic, and political force. The South lost about a million people as a whole to cities such as Chicago and Gary. Older industrial cities in the North, such as Detroit and Cleveland, began to decline. California lost 2 million residents who left to seek work in wartime industries.
