Hamlet mistreats the people that care about him, like Ophelia and Gertrude. Ophelia loved Hamlet, but kept constantly pushing her away; and while Hamlet was criticizing his own mother for sleeping with Claudius, his father had to interfere telling him the main focus was to avenge him, not make Gertrude constantly feel bad about her decision.
