-9x-48

well, it should be in the form of an equation: 5(2x-8)-2(x+4)-17x = 0 otherwise you can't solve it. like the other guy said, distribute coeffecients first. 5(2x-8) becomes 5*2x - 5*8 2(x+4) becomes 2x + 2*4 putting it all together, we have: (10x - 40) - (2x + 8) - 17x = 0 now just combine and simplify everything 10x - 40 - 2x - 8 - 17x = 0 -9x = 48

transpose -9x to other side and make it positive -48=9x divide both side by 9 so x=-9/48 simplified it if possible :)
