What was a joint-stock company? In three sentences please.(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A joint-stock company was a company that sold stock to investors who would then become shareholders of the company. The shareholders, in turn, were able to sell/trade/transfer their shares without requiring the permission or consent of other shareholders.
