jack spends 1 1/5 as long on his homework as jill last week jill spent 5 1/2 hours doing homework how long did jack spend doing homework

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If jack spends 1.2 times as long. You just need to multiply 5.5 by 1.2.

this is to do with mixed numbers and improper fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, convert each fraction into improper fractions. To do that, multiply the whole number eg. 5 by the bottom of the fraction and add the top of the fraction to get the top of the improper fraction. So you'd do 5x2+1 to get 11/2 for the second mixed number and 1x5+1 to get 6/5. Then multiply 6/5 by 11/2. Multiplying is just topxtop and bottomxbottom. So 66/10 or 33/5. And if you convert that back to a mixed number you get 6 3/5 because 5 goes into 33, 6 times with 3 left over.
