OpenStudy (fellowroot):

Does the spring constant change when you are compressing a spring compared with stretching a spring? The the spring constant of a spring ever change?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It should not since it is a spring CONSTANT right?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

If the spring is only slightly extended or compressed, the spring constant should be just that: constant. But you can certainly get weird behavior if you seriously distort the spring by stretching it too much. Certain spring with high spring constants can also be 'over-compressed'.
