Why shouldn't an earth wire be connected to a live wire?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

first do you know purpose of earth wire?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Earthing serves several purposes. Firstly, any exposed or extraneous conductive parts are connected to 'earth' so that, in the event of a fault, a live cable which touches an earthed metallic object will raise that metallic object to the same potential as the live part. So the current passes to the earth providing protection to user. with that said . I dont see why the question holds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because if the earth wire is connected to the live wire , it may be possible for current to flow from the livew wire directly towards the earth

OpenStudy (aravindg):

yep thats correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then why cant we connect the earth wire to the live wire

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you see actually we require the live wire to be connected to the appliance and NOT the earth wire
