The solution for the (time-independent) wavefunction is \[ \varphi = e^{\pm ikx}\] However, the solution to the potential well problem is \[ \varphi = \cos{kx+c}\] Why is it acceptable to cut off the imaginary part?

Surely removing a part of it gets the wrong answer for \[|\varphi|\]
