a mod has to make you mod. This is usually when they are hiring mods, usually because they are in need of more. You have to be an exemplary user, helpful, well liked by others, good personality, honest, and any other characteristic that a leader would be expected to have.

an admin has to make you a mod, and they are not "hired".  Mods are selected on account of the need for mods, and the online conduct which they present to the OS community, as well as their commitment to upholding OS standards.  

"Hired" would imply some sort of paycheck is involved :)

Only the Admins get payed, because they're the ones that sit infront of the computer all day doing nothing but reading posts, helping people, and helping OS; oh wait, we all do that don't we? WHERES MY PAYCHECK? xD Love you guys, love this site. and i love to help this site out!

Mods are recruited and are suggested by the other mods.  So you have to just keep doing good things, helping people and you will level up and then you can talk to a mod and you get into the pool!
