Find the value of x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

s\[\frac{ x - 3 }{ 8 } =16\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Typo. The s means nothing.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

16:4 8:2 x-3:2.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not familiar with these ratios. 16/4? Or 16 = 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 16 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since they're similar, you can set up a proportion. Make sure you keep the same triangle in the same fraction and the same sides in the same spot (numerator or denominator). \[\frac{ x-3 }{ 16 }=\frac{ 2.5 }{ 4 }\]Now, cross multiply:\[4(x-3)=16(2.5)\]\[4x-12=40\] Can you solve from here? :o)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4x - 12 = 40\]\[4x = 40 + 12\]\[4x = 52\]\[4x / 4x = 52 / 4x\]\[x = 13\]

Great! :o)
