Is the sequence 3, 12, 36, ... a geometric sequence? Explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. Successive terms of a geometric sequence have a common ratio. In this particular sequence, the ratio between the first and second terms is 4, since 3*4=12. However, the ratio between the second and third terms is 3, since 12*3=36. Clearly, 3 is not equal to 4.
