Last year, Gilbert contributed $75 toward his 401(k) account each month. If his employer matched 16% of his contributions, what was the total amount contributed to the 401(k) at the end of the year?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Find 16% of $75. Then add that to $75. Then multiply the sum by 12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide 16% by 75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

16% of 75 = 16% * 75 = 0.16 * 75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of = multiply. multiply 75 by .16

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes. 75*0.16. That's the amount Gilbert's employer contributes. Gilbert contributes $75. Then add $75*0.16 to $75 to get the total amount that is contributed each month to Gilbert's 401(k). Then multiply that sum by 12 to get the annual amount.

for some odd reason I keep getting 12. when I did .16 * 75. 12 is not part of the answer choices!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to do a few more steps. 12 is a correct step in this problem. Read my responses above. I already wrote twice what you need to do once you calculate 0.16 * 75 = 12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 I did what you said & I got 156..its not part of the choices

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You got 12 as the 16% of 75. That is good. That is how much the employer contributes each month How much does Gilbert contribute each month?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhh...I over read the question a bit lol. I didn't realize that there was two (the employees & gilbert. but okay hold on !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got $1044!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That's what I got. Good job!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

you're welcome
