Was Hester Prynne a heroine? Write a persuasive paragraph defending or condemning her actions.
5-7 sentences (paragraph)
Figurative language is an important element in poetry. Taking tone and style into consideration provide a simile that could be inserted in Bradstreet's poem and briefly explain your comparison.
Do you think that Hester Prynne was a heroine?
Think of it this way; Hester Prynne was shunned by her peers due to an action that today, although it's frowned upon, isn't considered a crime as it was then. However, she obeyed and wore the scarlet A, enduring the consequences and taking responsibility for her actions, as they were clearly punishable at the time. Eventually everyone figured out that she was actually a good person. I would say that she is a heroine in today's world but during her time she was just considered a harlot and an adulterer. Think of Galileo and discovering that the Earth revolved around the sun rather than the universe revolving around the Earth; the church tortured him until he recanted his discovery (a discovery that we found was true afterwards). He was a revolutionary thinker and is considered one of the great minds of all time. Oftentimes in stories like these, the heroine-like aspect of the character isn't discovered until after the "death" of the character or the end of the book. Once you finish reading it, you go "aha, I understand now, he/she was right all along." Discoveries and progression of science and beliefs over time create these aha moments as many of the things that were punishable then are common now, be it in actions or in scientific discoveries. Hope that helped a little, it's been years since I read the book but from what I remember, I think that's the kind of answer you're looking for!
