OpenStudy (francis1):

what an outlier is and how it affects the mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The outlier in math is the number (or numbers) that stands out from the others in the group. Say you have a group of numbers such as 12,14,15, and 1000. 100 would be the outlier. An outlier will cause the mean to change.. With the addition of the outlier, the mean moves in the direction of the outlier.
