People could move westward easily and cheaply. The connection into the Great Lakes allowed the expansion of the United States throughout the Great Lakes region. Manufacturing was spread out, putting factories near the sources of raw materials without restricting the market.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically goods and people were transported more quickly because of the Erie Canal being built.
