How does reproduction in sexual beings even start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It starts with the production of sex cells in males and females- in science terms, these are collectively known as gametes, but you might know them better as sperm and eggs. :) Males who are sexually mature produce sperm. Females who are sexually mature produce eggs. Sexual reproduction actually begins when the sperm and the egg come together through the process of fertilization. If you need any more explanation, please let me know! :)

Females start to produce egg cells from their birth; Males start to produce sperm cells at the age of 11-13. This production does not start spontaneously; it happens due to the fact that at age of male maturity, the DNA containing the gene that is responsible for testosterone uncoils (from its nucleosome (set of 8 histones)), making it possible for mRNA to copy this gene and hence making it possible for ribosomes to translate this gene and produce testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the production of sperm, as well as many other important factors which characterize a male.
