If I understand correctly, you want to create a spanning tree, but one with fixed children?

One way you could do this is by reversing an algorithm for creating a normal spanning tree. Like e.g. connect each child to a non-child node. Then connect those nodes to other non-child nodes until you end up with a single starting point.
