The decades before the Civil War were a time of great growth for the United States. As the country grew, the thinkers of the day developed vastly different ideas of what the United States should look like. Some felt that the United States should follow its “manifest destiny” to expand and grow. Some felt the United States should become a country free of slavery. Some felt it was necessary to unite the country—no matter the issues that divided it. Some felt that the national government was getting too strong and envisioned a country with greater rights for individual states. "EASSY"
