Dont use @Swaazy answer, People in the north responded positively, people in the south were scaird because they did not know the social repercussions of that would bring, and if anything probably made them want to stay seprate all the more.

@grosales01  the other guy @Swaazy was being a a-hole. The Emancipation Proclamation was a law signed by President Lincoln declaring all slaves in the south free and for Union soldiers (north) to treat them as free people. Northerners were anti-slavery so they responded well to it.
