How do I get the augmented matrix \[\left[\begin{matrix}1 & -3 & -8 & 5 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & 2 & -4 & 0\end{matrix}\right]\] into reduced row echelon form. It seems like everything I try when eliminating things will just eventually lead me to adding back something else... Is there something I am missing, or is this somehow irreducible?

Here is the problem.. am I misunderstanding and maybe dont need to reduce?

OpenStudy (experimentx):

what's in 7-12 ??

OpenStudy (experimentx):

why do you plan to find the augmented matrix? are you planning to solve the system ..? to solve system, you need to have the same number of equations as number of variables. It seems that the problem is asking you to find the null space of the matrix.

This section is all about parametric vector form.. I assumed I had to reduce the matrix first, is this problem simply asking me to rewrite the matrix?

OpenStudy (experimentx):

no ... I think it's asking you to find the null space of the matrix. vectors that are orthogonal to the row vectors.

Hmm, we havent talked about null space in class, not sure what that is.. guess Ill go hit office hours or something. But thanks, glad Im not crazy for thinking this was hard.
