After a producer converts the suns energy into 10,000 calories, what percentage is used by primary consumers and what percent is stored? I can't figure it out.
Well, it really depends on how large your groups are. Energy transfer between groups isn't all that efficient (which is why groups have to keep eating other groups), so most energy is going to be expended as heat or some other form of energy waste. Do you get that?
@RoarShack
Yes, I believe about 90% is lost as heat, and 10% is used. This is why I don't understand the question.
Okay, so you're on the right track! :D Only about 10 percent is transferred. Now you have to find out what 10% of 10,000 is.
By the way; that means that (like you said) 90% is used. And only 10% is passed on to another trophic level (that would be the organisms that eat the producers).
Do you understand this topic better now?
Their wording was strange, then, because they say "stored", which is what confuses me.
Yes I do understand it overall now.
Oh, yeah, totally. Sometimes the wording can throw off the whole question! I'm glad I could help you out today; if you ever need anymore help, let me know! :)
