i just need someone to double check my answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. write down number of ounces in a gallon 2. add the number of cards in a deck. 3. multiply by 100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2 4. divide by the GCF of 9 and 6 5. multiply by # of weeks in a year 6. multiply by # of legs on a centipede 7. subtract # of lbs in 2 1/2 tons 8. add # of hours in a week 9. subtract # of dimes in $ 500 10. subtract # of days in 2 years 11. add # of hours in a week 12. subtract # of days in Oct, Nov, and Dec 13. round to the nearest thousand 14. divide by 5 x 2 x 5 I got a number and I just want to see if anyone can get the same number. My number ended up being 131,760.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on the frist 2 did u get 116

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wat did u get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 128 + 52 = 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its # 3 that I am worried about.....and if you mess up on one, it carries through to the rest of the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many ounces r in a gallon?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

128 ounces in a gallon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no here is 64 ounces in a gallon because there is 16 oz in a pint and there is 4 pints in a gallon so u would do 16*4=? u tell m e

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is 8 pints in a gallon

OpenStudy (abb0t):

This is too much work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please don't give up on me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no there is 8 pints in 2 gallons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 in 2gallon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure, because the internet says there is 8 pints in a gallon and there is 128 ounces in a gallon ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that's not right 1 &2 should =116

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow...if I messed up on those, then the whole problem is wrong....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay 1-4 I got 1545.333333

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The number I got after doing number 4 is 5076.....we are way off....this problem is driving me crazy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hang on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay u r right on the oz I got 2398.66667

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let start at the front okay 128 + 52=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right okay 180 *100-19+9=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the 3rd one....do you work the problem out and then multiply the answer by 180. or do you put everything in parenthesis and distribute the 180 through all the numbers ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u could to pemdas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did u get for 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 2 different numbers 17990 16200 those r the ones I got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is how I did the 3rd one.... 100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2 100 - 19 (9/5 x 2) 100 - 19 + 18/5 81 + 18/5 = 405/5 + 18/5 = 423/5 I then multiplied 423/5 x 180 = 76140/5 = 15228 Is that how to do that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The way the problem is worded is confusing..... for the 3rd one.....is the problem 100 - 19 + 9 over 5 x 2 or is it 100 - 19 + (9/5) x 2. How would you interpret this problem....??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I got it by pemdas 180*100=18000 18000-19=17981 17981+9=17900 that's one the other one is 180*100=18000 180*(-19)=-342000 180*9+= 1620 then do 18000-3420+1620= 16200

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what happened to the 9/5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the 17900/5=3580 3580*2=7160 for the 16200/5=3240 3240*2= 6480 idk witch is right

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I wouldn't interpret it. I would just not do it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that means its rong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which way would you do it abb0t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he wouldnt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just dont know if it is 100 - 19 + 9 over 5 x 2 or if it is 100 - 19 + (9/5) x 2. There is no parenthesis in the problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe this is the only step in the problem that i am having trouble with :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya me too lol idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would like to thank you for trying.....I will give you a medal for trying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank u too that is hard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its driving me crazy....aaaaagggghhhh....CRAZY....lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol me too :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are a few more eyes looking at the problem....maybe they will give me their input .....I hope :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

1. write down number of ounces in a gallon .... 128 (assuming you mean fluid ounces) 2. add the number of cards in a deck. .... 128+52 = 180 3. multiply by 100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2 ... 180 x (100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2) = 15228 4. divide by the GCF of 9 and 6 ... 15228/3 = 5076 5. multiply by # of weeks in a year ... 5076*52 = 263952 6. multiply by # of legs on a centipede ... 263952*100 = 26395200 (note: the number of legs varies with each species) 7. subtract # of lbs in 2 1/2 tons ... 26395200 - 2500 = 26392700 8. add # of hours in a week ... 26392700 + 24*7 = 26392868 9. subtract # of dimes in $ 500 ... 26392868 - 500*10 = 26387868 10. subtract # of days in 2 years ... 26387868 - 365*2 = 26387138 (assuming non leap years) 11. add # of hours in a week ... 26387138 + 24*7 = 26387306 12. subtract # of days in Oct, Nov, and Dec ... 26387306 - (31+30+31) = 26387214 13. round to the nearest thousand ... 26387214 ---> 26387000 14. divide by 5 x 2 x 5 ... 26387000/(5 x 2 x 5) = 527740

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u way to smart lol that's good tho lol will u help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG.....thank you so much jim_thompson....I see where I messed up....I feel stupid now .....lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm sure you just made a silly error where did you go wrong by the way?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 3rd one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't feel stupid @kelliegirl33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

somehow I got the number of weeks in a year as 50...how stupid was that....don't answer that...lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh you follow PEMDAS 180 x (100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2) 180 x (100 - 19 + 1.8 x 2) 180 x (100 - 19 + 3.6) 180 x (84.6) 15,228 So 180 x (100 - 19 + 9/5 x 2) = 15,228

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I got the number of weeks in a year is 52

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you do NOT multiply the 5 and 2 to get 180 x (100 - 19 + 9/10) also you do NOT combine the first three terms in the parenthesis to get 180 x (90/5 x 2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got the 15228.....just messed up on the next one......I know there is 52 weeks in a year.....why did I put 50......that was stupid

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's pretty close it's not exactly 52 weeks since you have 365 - 52*7 = 1 day left over, but 52 is as close as it gets

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol idk will someone me on my problem please the factor 0.04

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you again jim :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you too shannon :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ur welcome :)
