Hey , do one thing ... break the figure into small rectangles... then use the formula for area of rectangles .... add them to get the total area...

Ya the big square is 5x8 = 40
subtract the rectangle at the bottom 2x7 = -14
then subtract the 3x3 section top right = -9
then that part on the left 2x2= -4
