Continuous variation can be any real number whereas discontinuous variation is always discrete. Example of a continuous variable would be height, where your height can take on any value whether it is a integer or not. A discrete variable would, for example, offspring that parents can have: you can have one kid, or two kids, but not 1.334 kids.
