Is there a way to figure out which exact orbital is empty? Like carbocations have the Pz orbital empty. How do we know that? Why not Px or Py?

You could draw a molecular orbital diagram. For higher order molecules use SALC´s and irreducible representations along with their atomic orbital

Did you have a particular molecule. M.O may be too complex to draw for organic compounds higher than methane. But can be done with inorganic complexes n such, for instance MoCl 5 or water, and NiH 4....

No I didn't have a particular molecule in mind. I know how to use MO, but I was just thinking if there was a quicker method. If not, that's fine. Thank you for your help.
